Macaronesia
The word Macaronesia comes from the Greek and means Happy or Fortunate Islands. In ancient mythology this was the paradise to which dead heroes of ancient Greece’s went.
Macaronesia is the collective name of five North Atlantic archipelagos quite close to the African continent- Azores – Canary Islands – Cape Verde- Madeira and the Savage Islands. This Atlantic archipelagos have in common geographical characteristics such as their volcanic origin, subtropical climate (except Cape Verde, tropical climate) particularly rich and diverse fauna and flora with abundant endemism.
Laurisilvas subtropical forests; natural prehistoric treasure, is formed by the laurel forests, a relic of the Tertiary that survives in the Canary archipelago in the mountainous massifs of the islands of Tenerife and La Palma. Although these forests used to cover much of North Africa and southern Europe 20 million years ago. Today they have practically disappeared. The laurel forest is made up of laurels, lichens, rhamnus glandulosa, heather, willows and visnea mocanera, among other flora .
