Guinea Bissau

Bissau, port city and capital of Guinea-Bissau was a portuguese fortified post and slave trade cente. At the mouth of the Geba River and in front of its coast there is the Bissagos Archipelago declared a natural biosphere reserve by UNESCO. It consists of a total of 88 islands and islets, some uninhabited.  Some other ones are the territory of the Bisagos- an indigenous people known for their matriarchal organization where women not only choose men but they also officiate at marriages.

The Joao Vieria-Poilao Islands Marine Park, which is located in the archipelago,  is a place chosen by green turtles for their spawning. In Orango Island hippos roam freely .

Other interesting islands are Bubake Island – the largest one – with its wonderful tropical sands and -Bafatá – which looks like a city still untouched.

Between the Rio Grande de Buba and the Corubel are the Cufada Lagoons. Navigating in a canoe through its solitarys waters will give you a sense of belonging to the Mother Nature
